PORT ORCHARD, Wash. — If you want to experience the “corpse flower’s” rare bloom, and its horrid smell, a Port Orchard nursery happens to have one flowering right now.
KING-5 reports the co-owner of The Brothers Greenhouses thought something had died in the nursery, before she realized the smell of rotting flesh was coming from the plant that hadn’t flowered for the last two years.
The smell of the “corpse flower” works with its coloring to appear as rotting meat, which attracts insects and helps it pollinate.
The bloom is expected to last another week before it wilts, at which point the nursery plans to harvest the plant’s bulbs and sell them to customers.
A worker tells KING-5, as long as it’s not blooming, it can be very beautiful.
