RLINGTON, Texas – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
· Erasmo Ramírez, RHP, recalled from rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma and activated from 10-day disabled list.
· Guillermo Heredia, OF, optioned to AAA Tacoma.
Ramírez (#31) is scheduled to start today’s (2:05 pm CT/12:05 pm PT) game at the Texas Rangers.
Ramírez, 27 (turns 28 on May 2), was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right shoulder-latissimus dorsi strain on March 28 (retroactive to March 26). He began his rehab assignment on April 7 with high-A Modesto, where he made a start at Lancaster, allowing 1 run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3 over 3.0 innings. His rehab assignment was transferred to AAA Tacoma on April 10. The 5-foot-10, 215-pound right-hander made 2 starts with the Rainiers, combining for a record of 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA (2 ER, 9.2 IP) with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk. In his most recent start – April 17 vs. Albuquerque – he worked 5.2 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned run) on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6.
Ramírez split the 2017 season between Tampa Bay and Seattle, combining for a record of 5-6 with a 4.39 ERA (64 ER, 131.1 IP) with 109 strikeouts and 31 walks in 37 games (19 starts). He was acquired by the Mariners from the Rays in exchange for RHP Steve Cishek on July 28, 2017. After making his 2017 Mariners debut on Aug. 1, he led the club in starts (11), innings (62.0) and strikeouts (54) for the remainder of the season. He tossed at least 6.0 innings in 7 of his 11 starts with Seattle and limited opponents to 2 earned runs or fewer in 7 of his 11 outings as a Mariner. Overall, he was 1-3 with a 3.92 ERA (27 ER, 62.0 IP) with 54 strikeouts and 15 walks in 11 starts with Seattle in 2017.
In six Major League seasons with Seattle (2012-14, ’17-c) and Tampa Bay (2015-17), he is 30-35 with 3 saves and a 4.20 ERA (276 ER, 592.0 IP) with 463 strikeouts and 169 walks in 182 games (82 starts). Ramirez was traded by Seattle to Tampa Bay on March 31, 2015 in exchange for left-handed pitcher Mike Montgomery. He is one of 43 players to have spent at least two different stints with the Mariners. The native of Rivas, Nicaragua was originally signed by Seattle in 2007 and made his Major League debut with the Mariners in 2012, posting a 3.36 ERA (22 ER, 59.0 IP) in 16 games, including 8 starts, that season.
Heredia, 27, has appeared in 16 games with the Mariners this season, going 9-for-29 (.310) with 4 runs, 1 double, 2 home runs and 4 RBI. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound outfielder was named to his 2nd career Opening Day roster this season after batting .233 (10×43) with 4 runs, 4 double, 1 triple and 2 RBI in 19 Cactus League games with Seattle this spring.
In 123 games with the Mariners in 2017, Heredia hit .249 (96×386) with 43 runs, 16 doubles, 6 home runs and 24 RBI. Heredia was originally signed by the Mariners as a free agent on March 1, 2016. The native of Matanzas, Cuba, made his Major League debut with the Mariners on July 29, 2016 at the Cubs. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Mariners (2016-c), he is batting .252 (128×507) with 59 runs, 20 double, 9 home runs and 40 RBI in 184 career games. He is a career .286 (61×213) hitter against left-handers with a .348 on-base percentage and a .408 slugging mark (.756), compared to a .226 (66×292) mark against right-handers with a .313 on-base percentage and a .298 slugging percentage (.611 OPS).
