MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A Mount Vernon man accused of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student when he was a substitute teacher and assistant coach turned himself in Wednesday.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports 26-year-old Todd J. Wright Jr. had worked at Mount Vernon High School and was charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.

Court documents show the two met when Wright substituted for a class the student was in, began exchanging messages and became intimate over spring break.

Even though the student is an adult, it is against state law for employees to engage in a relationship with students at their school when the student is under 21, and more than 5 years younger than the employee.
