OLYMPIA, Wash. — Whatcom County will get a good chunk of over $12.6 million in state grants for trails and waterfront parks.

The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Funding Board announced the award to counties around the state to restore state beaches and waterfront parks, and Whatcom County will receive one million dollars.

The grant allows the Whatcom County Parks and Recreation Department to purchase over 13 acres of land to develop a waterfront park in Birch Bay.

The land is in the business and shoreline area of the community and will provide beach access, parking, restrooms and activity areas.
