OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Department of Licensing has a new leader after public controversy.

Governor Jay Inslee appointed Teresa Bernsten as the new head of the agency.

The current department head Pat Kohler will resign at the end of June after facing accusations of releasing personal information, including birthplace, to federal immigration authorities.

Bernsten served as deputy director of the Department of Licensing for more than four years, was a policy adviser with former Governor Chris Gregoire, and is currently the director of the Washington State Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises.
