BELLINGHAM, Wash. — An inmate being held on multiple pending felony charges is believed to have hung himself Monday at the Whatcom County Jail.

38-year-old Kirk Daniel Powless of Bellingham apparently fashioned a noose from his shirt and jammed it in a cell door.

Other inmates activated a panic alarm, notifying deputies. Staff immediately responded and performed CPR, but paramedics pronounced the inmate dead at the scene. Police and the medical examiner are still investigating the incident further.

Powless was being held on charges of Identity Theft, Possession of Stolen Property 2nd degree and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
