SEATTLE, Wash. — The National Rifle Association, Second Amendment Foundation and two Seattle residents are suing the city over its new gun safety law that requires owners to lock up their guns.

The Seattle Times reports the lawsuit filed Friday in King County Superior Court says the safe storage requirement violates Washington state law, which prevents cities from regulating guns.

Mayor Jenny Durkan signed the legislation last Wednesday after the City Council unanimously passed it.

Gun owners could face fines between $500 if the firearm isn’t locked up, to $10,000 if their gun is used in a crime.

The Seattle residents in the lawsuit cite a fear of home invasions for keeping their firearms unlocked.
