BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A scam making the rounds lately is now using a different angle on potential victims.
Bellingham Police posted on their Facebook about reports of the DEA calling to tell you a car registered in your name was found loaded with drugs in Texas and you need to transfer your bank account to them to avoid seizure.
Other calls with cloned or spoofed phone numbers to make them seem legitimate are threatening people with arrest if they don’t immediately pay bills, fines or back taxes.
Another tells the person to buy a gift card and read the scammer the number off the back.
None of these situations are legitimate.
Law enforcement and government agencies do not conduct themselves this way and urge you to call police if you think you’ve been targeted or have any doubts about a phone call, otherwise, just hang up.
