LYNDEN, Wash. — A number of local wastewater treatment plants had outstanding performance this year, but Bellingham didn’t make the cut.
The Department of Ecology recognized 111 top-performing plants in Washington this year, which is about a third of all systems operating across the state.
The agency evaluated Washington wastewater treatment plants to determine how they meet pollution limits, monitoring requirements, spill prevention planning and operational demands outlined in their permits.
Ferndale and Lynden both made the list and the City of Burlington’s wastewater treatment plant has won the award for the last 5 consecutive years.
Bellingham’s plant and others that weren’t recognized this year can apply for state funding to improve their systems.
