BELLINGHAM, Wash. — As Bellingham students walked into school for their first day of classes Wednesday, they may have been surprised to see a Bellingham Police officer greeting students and visiting with teachers.

The City of Bellingham says this is part of the BPD’s Adopt-a-School program where officers “adopt” one of Bellingham’s twenty-one schools to visit throughout the school year.

The department and district say this program builds on the days of D.A.R.E. and G.R.E.A.T. in the 1990’s and they hope to continue to develop and nurture healthy relationships between police and kids.
