SILVERDALE, Wash. – The Navy has determined where the mystery mine came from.

Its investigation found that the inert mine found floating near Bainbridge Island Tuesday was used in a demonstration of unmanned underwater vehicles’ detection and avoidance abilities in 2005.

The Navy detonated the mine Tuesday evening.

A number of inert mines were deployed for the exercise and just a few of those were buoyant.

Not all of the mines were recovered.

The Navy says it will work to recover any remaining buoyant mines.
