OLYMPIA, Wash. — With Hurricane Florence doing damage to the east coast, Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman is asking those who want to help to look out for fake charities.
“When there is a natural disaster such as Hurricane Florence, scam artists unfortunately try to take advantage of people’s compassion,” Wyman said. “As in any time of need, generous Washingtonians are looking for ways they can help. We want to ensure their donations go to reputable organizations with a proven record of good service.”
In partnership with the Attorney General, Wyman launched the GiveSmart program to provide tools, information and advice to help donors make informed charitable contributions.
GiveSmart recommends people do their research before giving to a charity, and has various databases that provide information on their reputation.
