BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Temporary tent encampments may be in Bellingham’s future.
An ordinance calling for temporary homeless shelters, including tent and tiny home encampments, will be up for discussion at the next Bellingham City Council meeting.
The City of Bellingham reports Whatcom County’s estimated homeless population has increased from 493 to 742 in the last five years, partly due to a lack of affordable housing.
The City’s planning commission recommends establishing temporary housing accommodations throughout Bellingham with a temporary use permit, but they don’t yet have any specific locations in mind.
Citizens are welcome to comment at the meeting on Monday at 7 P.M. at City Hall.
