BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Shellfish in Bellingham Bay now have potentially lethal levels of biotoxins.
The Whatcom County Health Department reports paralytic shellfish poisoning has reached a dangerous level in Bellingham Bay shellfish.
The risk is especially high in mussels because they pick up toxins more quickly than other shellfish.
The agency says the biotoxin closure has been expanded this week to include all beaches from Birch Point south to the Skagit County line, including those at Larrabee State Park.
Biotoxin levels can change quickly and the health department is collecting samples weekly to monitor them.
