OLYMPIA, Wash. — A campaign funded almost entirely by the soda industry has raised more than $20 million backing a measure to prevent local governments from placing new taxes on sugary drinks or grocery items.
The “Yes! To Affordable Groceries” campaign is primarily sponsored by the American Beverage Association and is one of the top initiative fundraising efforts in the state.
While approval of the measure would stop cities and counties from imposing their own taxes, it would not prevent the state from doing so and Seattle’s soda tax would stay in effect.
