BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Bellingham City Council voted in favor of a resolution endorsing Initiative 1631, which would impose a fee on large carbon pollution emitters in the state.
Councilmember Terry Bornemann spoke in favor of the resolution before the vote Monday night.
“We can’t sit around and wait for federal leadership because we’re not going to get any. This falls on the state, the municipalities, and the people to provide the leadership to get things done,” he said.
Councilmember Pinky Vargas, who is running for state senator in the 42nd District, abstained from the vote because she works for Puget Sound Energy.
The utility says on its website that it takes no position on I-1631.
