BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Multiple cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been reported in Bellingham.

Western Washington University reports at least five students have been diagnosed with the viral illness in the last two weeks.

Hand, foot and mouth disease typically affects young children, but it’s being seen more among college populations and is easily spread through coughing, sneezing or sharing utensils and drinks.

Symptoms can include fever, body aches, cough, runny nose and lesions in the mouth, on the hands and feet .

The WWU Student Health Center recommends affected students stay in isolation until symptoms resolve.
