OLYMPIA, Wash. — It was a good year for midterm voter turnout, just barely falling short of the record set in 1970.

Secretary of State Kim Wyman says 71.83% of registered voters cast ballots in the November election, and that turnout would have surpassed 1970’s 71.85% had about 1,100 more people participated.

The total number of ballots cast was the third highest in state history, coming in behind the 2016 and 2012 Presidential Elections.

Washington’s voter participation was also among the highest in the nation.
