BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Demolition work on the old Sehome High School gym revealed more asbestos than expected, but the school district assures families, students and staff that everything is safe and no one was exposed.

Principal Michelle Kuss-Cybula reached out to parents in an email Tuesday saying contractors were expecting asbestos from the start due to the age of the building, and that they took necessary precautions.

She says any asbestos is covered by walls or flooring and is dealt with before it becomes a health concern.

An asbestos abatement contractor is also on site and the removal is being overseen by a third-party professional industrial hygienist.

Students and staff are expected to move into the new Sehome High School at the end of the month.
