BIRCH BAY, Wash. — With the approval of the Lummi Indian Business Council, a berm construction project along Birch Bay Drive is all but ready to begin.

Construction for the project was originally planned to be done over the course of two winters, but now the county plans to speed things up and complete the work before summer 2020.

The official name of the plan is the Birch Bay Drive and Pedestrian Facility Project.

The Northern Light reports the project is designed to make improvements to the road to guard against storms like the one this past December, to do pedestrian upgrades, and to restore the beach area at Birch Bay.

The total project is estimated to cost Whatcom County $11.5 million.
