OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — A proposal for universal, all-grade sex education passed the state Senate Wednesday after extensive debate.

The proposal would require schools across the state to teach sex education classes, and to include information about consent and how to recognize abusive relationships.

Minority Republicans opposed to the measure tried to attach more than a dozen amendments.

Democratic lawmakers say the bill would require classes to be age-appropriate and help create awareness of healthy relationships.

Locally, Sen. Lovelett (D) of the 40th District voted in favor of the bill, while Sen. Ericksen (R) of the 42nd District voted against.

The bill will be introduced in the House next.
