OLYMPIA, Wash. — A new survey finds our tax system makes Washington a pretty nice state for people with high incomes, but not so much for middle and low income earners.
WalletHub looked at the sales, property and, in states where they have one, the income tax burden carried by people with high, medium and low incomes.
Washington has a fairly mild tax burden for high earners at an average of just over 7% of their income, placing the state 13th in the nation.
But for low income workers we’re dead last with a tax burden of more than 14.5%.
Compare that to the best state for low income earners, Delaware, where they have a burden of just over 5%.
Washington isn’t much better for middle income earners, coming in at number 48 on the list.
These findings were not based on tax rates, but on the share of a person’s income that is contributed to various tax obligations.
