OLYMPIA, Wash. — The state attorney general and the governor are reminding gun shop owners they have to follow new laws regardless of how their sheriffs interpret them.

Bob Ferguson and Jay Inslee sent a letter to gun stores in counties where sheriffs say they won’t enforce expanded gun laws.

The letter states that all laws and initiatives are assumed to be constitutional unless courts rule otherwise, and that violations will be reported to larger law enforcement agencies like the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo says that while he’s troubled by parts of the law, it’s the courts’ job to determine its constitutionality.
