OLYMPIA, Wash. — The State Patrol will be conducting a “secure load” emphasis starting Monday and violators could face hefty fines.
Troopers are partnering with the state Department of Ecology and Department of Transportation in this effort to increase road safety and prevent roadside litter.
Littering is punishable by fines ranging from $50 to $5000 with the largest fines issued for “lit debris,” like cigarettes, and large items that can cause crashes.
The agency says a vehicle’s load is secure when no cargo can slide, shift or fall onto the roadway.
Emphasis patrols will end May 12.
Roadside litter is a threat to our health and the environment. Don’t be careless. Secure and cover your vehicle’s load, every time. It could save you an expensive ticket. It could save someone else’s life. @wastatepatrol Secure Load emphasis patrols start Monday. @WSDOT pic.twitter.com/3UNXcMeCMM
