BIRCH BAY, Wash. — The beach restoration project in Birch Bay, known as The Berm, is set to become a reality.

The project aims to protect the area from storm surges by replacing some concrete structures while also adding pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure along Birch Bay Drive.

The Northern Light reports the final shoreline development permit to be issued by Whatcom County is the last of nearly a dozen individual permits from state, local and federal government agencies required to green light the project.

After a hearing on the project on April 10, Whatcom County Hearing Examiner Michael Bobbink said he expects to approve the final permit later this month, allowing work to begin this fall.
