OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — An online petition calling for a Washington state senator to shadow a nurse for a twelve-hour shift is gaining traction.

Republican Senator Maureen Walsh of College Place drew the ire of the internet over the weekend after saying that critical care nurses “probably play cards for a considerable part of the day.”

She made the comment last week while speaking against a bill that prohibits health care employers from “using prescheduled on-call time to fill chronic or foreseeable staff shortages,” and “scheduling nonemergency procedures that would
require overtime.”

A Washington State Nurses Association blog responding to her comment drew so many readers that the site crashed.

More than 557,000 people have sign the petition by Change.org as of Monday morning.
