OLYMPIA, Wash. — In honor of Earth Day, Washington State Ferries announced they’re getting greener.
The agency launched a two-year Sustainability Action Plan that outlines dozens of actions they will take for more eco-friendly ferries and terminals.
Actions include using a 10% blend of biodiesel fleetwide (instead of the current 5% blend), trying out smaller vessels for lesser-used runs on the Seattle-Bainbridge route, and installing high-efficiency water fixtures and LED light fixtures at all their facilities.
Currently, the Washington State Ferry system is the largest consumer of diesel fuel in the state, burning more than 18 million gallons per year.
“Because we operate our 23 ferries on Puget Sound and manage 20 terminals on its shores, we have an obligation to ensure WSF is doing everything we can to protect our environment,” says Assistant Secretary Amy Scarton.
