SMITH ISLAND, Wash. — Emergency responders rescued 45 passengers from a sinking whale-watching boat south of San Juan County’s Lopez Island Thursday afternoon.

Fish & Wildlife Sergeant Russ Mullins told the Skagit Valley Herald the crew beached the boat at Smith Island after it apparently hit a rock and started taking on water.

Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard Bellingham Station assisted with the rescue.

No injuries were reported.
