BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Whooping cough is going around at Western Washington University.

The University says they have identified six cases of pertussis on Western’s main campus in the last two months.

They say they’re working hard to keep the illness, known as whooping cough, from spreading and they’ve offered all close contacts antibiotics and advised all classroom contacts to watch for symptoms.

Health officials say it requires close contact with an infected person in order to spread and it can result in severe illness in infants.

Community members should be sure their pertussis vaccinations are current.
