WASHINGTON, D.C. — Hackers stole photos of travelers crossing the nation’s borders in what Customs and Border Protection calls a “malicious cyberattack” on a government contractor.
The Washington Post reports the information included photos of peoples’ faces and their license plates.
The data is part of CBP’s expanding facial-recognition program.
The agency says data from airports wasn’t compromised but photos from land crossings including the border with Canada were stolen.
A CBP statement says none of the information has turned up on “the Dark Web or Internet,” but a British security service says it’s seen information from a U.S. contractor offered as a free download.
