BELLINGHAM, Wash. — With a stretch of warm weather in the forecast, the danger increases for pets left in vehicles.

Whatcom Humane Society executive director Laura Clarke recommends not taking your animal with you to grocery store and then leaving it in a car.

“Cars can heat up so quickly, and in a matter of just a couple minutes your animal can suffer from heat stroke, heat exhaustation, and even death,” she says.

Quinn say the Humane Society gives this warning every year and yet still get calls about animals in hot cars.

She says you should not break the window of a vehicle if you see a distressed pet inside but should call 911 to alert animal control.

And she says to be sure that pets at home have proper shelter and access to cool water.
