BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Thirty years after 18-year-old Mandy Stavik was murdered in Whatcom County, her killer Timothy Bass was sentenced to nearly 27 years in prison.

Stavik disappeared in November 1989 while on a jog near her home on Strand Road in Clipper, near Acme, and her body was found in the Nooksack River three days later.

Bass, who was already a suspect, was arrested in 2017 after authorities matched his DNA to evidence found on Stavik’s body.

After a three-week trial in May, a jury in Whatcom County Superior Court found 51-year old Bass guilty of first-degree murder.

Now he faces almost three decades, the maximum sentence possible in this case, behind bars.
