OLYMPIA, Wash. — Planning for retirement? Don’t plan on Washington.
Bankrate.com rates all 50 states on their attractiveness for retirees and Washington comes in 46th.
We don’t do well on affordability, crime rate, wellness and – not so surprisingly – weather.
Our west coast neighbors Oregon and California don’t fare too well either, ranking at 44th and 43rd, respectively.
Bankrate says the best states to spend your golden years in are Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota and Florida.
The methodology for these rankings weighted affordability (40%), crime (5%), culture (15%), weather (15%) and wellness (25%), but the interactive tool also allows for rankings to change, depending on one’s retirement priorities.
With all factors weighted at an equal 20%, Washington came in at 49th and Vermont 1st, followed closely by other less-affordable New England states.
