LUMMI NATION, Wash. — An emergency road closure goes into effect Wednesday at 8 AM while the Lummi Tribe hosts the “Paddle to Lummi,” an intertribal canoe journey.

The Whatcom County Public Works Department says Lummi View Drive will be closed until Sunday at 6 PM.

It will only be open to local residents, emergency vehicles and WTA buses.

10,000 people from tribes in Oregon, Washington and B.C. will make their way in about 100 canoes to the Stommish Grounds on the Lummi Reservation in celebration of the ancestral waterways of the Salish Sea.

The community is invited to attend the event, but parking is limited to areas outside the Stommish Grounds.

Shuttle service will be ongoing throughout the festivities.
