BELLINGHAM, Wash. — After a large-scale cleanup and numerous environmental tests, the site of a gas leak in Sudden Valley is on the mend.

The site, located at 2650 Lake Louise Road, is known as “Area Z.”

According to the Department of Ecology, the area had been used as a sewage lift station and the problem was discovered during excavation work on sewer infrastructure for the Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District nearby.

During the station’s expansion in 1999, petroleum from leaking underground fuel storage tanks was discovered and Ecology confirmed it had contaminated the soil and groundwater.

After the disposal of about 2,500 cubic yards of contaminated soil as well as site treatment and monitoring, the Department of Ecology has determined that the site meets all state cleanup standards.
