SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) — Seattle is considering a tax on Uber and Lyft rides in the city.
The Seattle Times reports Mayor Jenny Durkan expects to get about $25-million a year from the 51-cent-per-ride tax.
She’d like to use the money to help fill the $56-million budget shortfall for the downtown streetcar, fund affordable housing and help Uber and Lyft drivers who are removed from the apps.
With City Council approval, the tax would start next July.
Uber and Lyft slammed the tax proposal, saying it will drive up costs for riders.
