BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Huge rocks shipped through Bellingham’s working waterfront will continue to shore up Columbia River jetties that protect vital shipping lanes.

The Daily Astorian reports The Army Corps of Engineers awarded the contract for the final phase of the rehabilitation of the jetties that protect $20-billion worth of shipping through the mouth of the Columbia each year.

The contractor expects to resume work in March, using rocks from northwest Washington and Oregon quarries.

Some of the rocks are trucked to the Port of Bellingham and then taken by barge to Longview.

The contractor expects the work to take four to five years.
