BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Whatcom County breaks ground on a new Crisis Stabilization Center Monday, September 30th.
Sheriff Bill Elfo says on his Facebook page that the 32-bed facility will provide law enforcement officers a better option than jail for people they encounter who are suffering mental health or substance abuse issues.
The County Council identified the need for a larger facility with more services and the planning process began in 2017.
The $9.5 million expansion is funded by combined support from the state capital budget, the North Sound Behavioral Health Organization and the county’s Behavioral Health Fund.
The facility is next to the Jail Alternative and Work Center in the Irongate Neighborhood and is expected to open in June 2020.
