BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The family of a woman who committed suicide while behind bars has settled a wrongful death lawsuit against the Whatcom County Jail.
Shannon Rose Jefferson hanged herself in her solitary confinement cell in 2014 and was taken to the hospital where she died hours later.
According to the Bellingham Herald, the 36-year-old was a Lummi tribal member and a mother of six.
The lawsuit alleged Jefferson’s death could have been prevented had she received more mental health care.
