BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Two local teachers are among five state-level finalists for an award over their performance.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal says the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is the highest honor for STEM teachers.

Christopher Piasecki, a math teacher at Fairhaven Middle School and Andrea Ames, a science teacher at Meridian High School are in the running.

Selection committees chose teachers based on content mastery, effective instructional methods and more.

If any of the five teachers are chosen as a national awardee, they get to travel to DC for recognition, get a certificate signed by the president, and receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation.
