MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — Research in Skagit County is aimed at helping organic carrot growers.
Plant pathologists harvested orange, yellow, white and purple carrots of all shapes and sizes last week as part of the research trial to test carrots’ genetic resistance to disease.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports 220 breeding lines of carrots were planted this summer at the Washington State University Mount Vernon Research Center.
Researchers then exposed them to fungus to the find varieties that are the most disease-resistant and have the best nutrition and flavor.
