OLYMPIA, Wash. — Whatcom County’s Lake Terrell and Pass Lake in Skagit County are among 15 Washington lakes with dangerous levels of toxic algae.

The Department of Ecology recently added Seattle’s popular Green Lake to the list.

The Seattle Times reports the algae can cause rashes, hives and itchy throats for people but can seriously sicken and possibly kill dogs.

The algae grows in lakes that have high concentrations of phosphorus or nitrogen.
