OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The state Supreme Court ruled the state cannot be held at fault for the the I-5 bridge collapse over the Skagit River in 2013.

A truck carrying an oversized load struck the overhead support beams of the bridge, causing it to fall into the river.

Three people in two vehicles also went into the water but no one was killed.

The state sued the Canadian trucking company which countersued, claiming the state should have to pay part of the penalty for issuing a permit for the load and not properly maintaining the bridge.

In a 5-4 decision, the court cited a state law that says the state can’t be held liable for damages caused by an over-height vehicle.
