SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. — An international non-profit is looking at Skagit County as a possible location for the world’s first whale sanctuary.

Whale Sanctuary Project says about 100-acres of Deepwater Bay on Cypress Island could serve as the new home of orcas released from entertainment facilities.

This would include Lolita, or Tokitae, who was taken from the Salish Sea in 1970 and now lives at Miami Seaquarium.

The project says the location’s proximity to endangered Southern Resident orcas and an ongoing dispute over the area with Cooke Aquaculture which is trying to start up another growing operation there after the collapse of its last one, could be problems.
