PORT ANGELES, Wash. — Backlash in Port Angeles after the mayor suggests removing images of soldiers holding guns on a newly installed fence at Veterans Memorial Park.

KOMO reports a memo from Mayor Sissi Bruch cited some complaints she received about the images due to concerns over gun violence.

A city councilmember and the fence designer joined hundreds in the community pushing back against the idea.

Bruch says she doesn’t think the images are offensive and she means no disrespect, but she wanted to ask, “can we represent freedom and democracy” with images like flags and eagles rather than a soldier with a gun?

She apologized for her comments seeming disrespectful.

The City Council will discuss the memo at a meeting Wednesday night.
