EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office fired two deputies after an investigation found they searched a suspect’s car without a warrant and then tried to cover it up.

The Daily Herald reports Sheriff Ty Trenary accused them of dishonesty and other policy violations.

The deputies claimed to be taking inventory of a vehicle that had been seized when its owner was arrested on a drug charge, but the investigation found that they were actually conducting a criminal investigation.

They later applied for a search warrant and failed to tell the judge that they had already looked in the car and found a shotgun.
