BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A team from Western Washington University is researching the recycling potential of ocean plastics.

Associate professor of Engineering and Design John Misasi says they’re trying to figure out how ocean plastics in their various degrees of degradation can be broken down, mixed, and recombined into new compounds.

The team is working to build new compounds made from plastics washed up on beaches near Kodiak, Alaska.

Misasi says the work they are doing could help countries rethink the way they deal with their ocean plastics.
