BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Granite Construction, a California company with a location in Bellingham, was awarded the contract to build the Birch Bay Drive and Pedestrian Facility project, otherwise known as the berm.

Whatcom county awarded the $8.7 million contract to Granite from a field of 11 bidders.

A preliminary schedule shows the company plans to start work at the south end of the project near Lora Lane in January, then work to the north end at Cedar Avenue over a period of two years.

A separated berm with a pathway will facilitate pedestrian use along Birch Bay Drive and protect the roadway from storm damage.
