MARYSVILLE, Wash. — Our highways were a bit safer in 2019.

State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman reports there was a 52% decrease in serious-injury accidents caused by impaired drivers in District 7, covering Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish and Island Counties.

She says troopers arrested over 3500 suspected impaired drivers in the district last year.

Troopers also stopped more than 4600 distracted drivers and helped reduce the number of distracted driving collisions by 35% from 2018.

They also made more than 1100 drug and other arrests, including that of a suspected pimp and the rescue of two possible sex trafficking victims in Whatcom County in September.
