SEATTLE, Wash. — The Cascades have a high risk of avalanches.

According to the Northwest Avalanche Center, heavy snow and rain will cause a widespread natural avalanche cycle throughout the Cascades, including Mount Baker.

The agency says avalanches could grow very large, running from the top of the mountain all the way to the valley bottom.

Due to safety concerns, the DOT had closed a portion of Highway 20 and the Mount Baker Highway.

Check avalanche forecasts at the NWAC site before heading off to avalanche areas.
